The violinist Mitchell Newman was born in L.A. and joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1987. After his studies with the Philharmonic violinist David Stockhammer, he attended the Curtis Institute of Music where he studied with David Cerone, Yumi Ninomya and Aaron Rosand.
Newman is currently a regular participant of the Chamber Music Society and the Green Umbrella Series of the L.A. Philharmonic. He has played with the Mendelssohn Octet with Joshua Bell and Piano Quintet of Thomas Ades. He can be listened to in the Southwest Chamber Music of the Grammy and in the First and Third String Quartets of Carlos Chávez. He has also recorded the music of Eric Zeisl for Mundi & Stories Harmony from My Favorite Planet, by composer Russell Steinberg from Los Angeles. Newman frequently performs in the Gold Coast Chamber Music Festival in the San Francisco area.
Newman is chairman of the Board of the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra. In the summer of 2010, he opened Hilltop Boot Camp: Orchestra Audition Preparation for Strings (playdonjuan.com).
Each year he produces, performs and narrates a concert in english and spanish for the Los Angeles Philharmonic at St. Thomas Church. He also organizes and performs each year a chamber music concert to raise funds for the Mental Health America Long Beach Institution and is recognized as Hero of Mental Health by the California State Senate.
For now, Newman teaches private lessons and instructs orchestral repertoire at Colburn School. He travels frequently to Ensenada, Mexico, to work with our students at Benning with the initiative of providing instrument lessons to children of all economic backgrounds.
